How Stump Grinding Works

Here's what happens when we show up to your property.

60hp diesel stump grinder at work

Our Carlton SP7015 is a 60hp turbo-diesel stump grinder. It's roughly 10-feet long with a spinning cutting wheel on the front. It can grind up to 15 inches below ground level to make sure the stump is gone forever.

There's no excavation. The machine rolls up to the stump and grinds it into mulch. The wood chips can be reused in garden beds or replaced with topsoil and grass seed.

For most stumps, the entire process takes less than 30 minutes.

How to measure a stump for grinding

We charge $10 per inch, measured at the widest point where the stump meets the ground. If you want the entire mound removed flush with the surrounding grass, we measure the full base including roots, not just the narrow cut face where the tree was sawed.

For 15 years, I worked in climate and energy. But stump grinding is the most satisfying work I've done. It's working outdoors, working with my hands, and delivering tangible results. The before-and-after photos say it all.

Lightning Stump Removal is a family business. My wife and kids are the reason I show up when I say I will, and the reason I do clean, careful work.

Our rate is $10 per inch of cumulative stump diameter, measured at the widest point where each stump meets the ground. The minimum job is $300. Full cleanup (wood chip removal) is 2× the base price. Hardwood stumps (oak, hickory, sugar maple) are 1.5× due to increased equipment wear. Use our pricing calculator above to get an instant estimate.
Most single stumps take between 15 and 45 minutes to grind, depending on the size and root spread. A typical residential job with a few stumps is completed in under two hours. We serve most areas across Central Ontario with fast turnaround times.
Basic backfill and leveling is included with every job. If you want all wood chips hauled away, that's available as an add-on (see pricing calculator above). Many homeowners keep the chips - they make excellent free mulch for gardens and landscaping.
Absolutely. Our precision equipment allows us to grind stumps close to foundations, fences, walkways, and underground utilities. We always call Ontario One Call before digging to locate any buried lines. Our operators have 15+ years of experience working around sensitive structures.
In most Central Ontario municipalities, you do not need a permit for stump grinding on private residential property. However, if the tree was removed under a municipal tree-cutting bylaw, there may be conditions on the stump removal. We can help you navigate any local requirements.
No. Stump grinding destroys the stump and the root crown below ground level, which prevents regrowth. In rare cases, some tree species (like poplar or elm) may send up small shoots from remaining roots, but these die off quickly without a root system to sustain them. If any shoots appear, a single treatment will eliminate them.
